John Eakins Obituary

John Truell Eakins 1945-2021

John was born in Mauston, Wisconsin as the first son of Arnold and Genevieve (Mohns) Eakins. He was proud of his two sons: Evan Michael of Woodbridge, VA and Colin Andrew of Cedar Rapids, IA. His brother Richard Eakins (Linda) live in Windsor, Wisconsin. His parents and brother Douglas have predeceased him. His niece Rebecca (Kyle) Kukshtel lives in New York, cousin Christina Von Torne in Maine, Kara Koffron in California, plus numerous others.

His sons agree, John lived in the moment. He enjoyed coaching his sons in baseball: T-Ball, coach pitch, and pony; soccer: indoor, outdoor, with Colin in Colin’s teen years, driving Evan as Evan refereed soccer. He was an avid gardener of roses and vegetables. Baking became a welcome hobby as he made bread, lattice topped-pies, and Christmas breads that he generously gave away. His preferred things to cook included ceviche, beef stew, garlic garlic shrimp, spaghetti, and ham and cheese Welsh Rarebit with a good IPA. John liked grilling too, and corn on the cob and fresh salmon were always “the best we ever had”. He collected antiques like his piano desk, glass coffee container, an old coffee grinder, and his grandmother’s pastry blender and Hoosier Kitchen Cabinet. He liked walking, hiking, and camping at Mount Rainier.

John loved people, took them where they were, made many friends. Lee and June Clemons, Marylynn Strickland, Ed Raines, Jim Dolesci and Holly at Safeway, and a men’s group are among the many. John loved telling stories about college and history.

A memorial service will take place at St. John the Baptist Church, 25810 156th Ave SE, Covington, WA 98042 on Thursday, March 18, at 11:00 AM. Remembrances can be made to Providence Mount St Vincent Foundation in Seattle. The Mount was a Godsend and happy place for John since 2017. It is the best!
