John de Jong Obituary

John de Jong, a cherished husband, father, and vibrant member of the Seattle community, passed away on January 25, 2024, from congestive heart failure in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 87. Born on September 14, 1936, in Apeldoorn, Netherlands, John's life journey brought him across the ocean, where he established deep roots and touched many lives with his selflessness and faith.

After moving to the United States, John pursued an education as a boiler technician in Seattle, where he also met and married the love of his life, Gertrude de Jong. Together, they built a family that came to include a son, Karl de Jong, and a daughter, Yvonne Marquez.

John dedicated over forty years of service as a member of the local 609 of the International Union of Operating Engineers. His work with the Seattle Public School District showcased his commitment to the community, ensuring safe and functional environments for generations of students to learn and grow. His hands-on skills were unparalleled, and his dedication was undeniable, earning the respect and admiration of his peers.

His passion for faith was evident through his active involvement in the Jehovah's Witnesses community. John found deep fulfillment in going door to door with his congregation, sharing his beliefs and the religious teachings that guided his life. His faith was a cornerstone of his existence and a beacon for those who knew him.

In his younger years, John found solace and strength in the sport of boxing. As a proud contender in the WAC Golden Glovers Club, he showcased his athletic ability during the spirited tournament held from February 24th to 25th in 1961 at the Civic Ice Arena in Seattle. This period of his life illustrated his fighting spirit, a quality that he would carry with him in all aspects of his life.

John's curiosity and love for history were mirrored in his hobby as an avid collector. His stamp and coin collections were a testament to his meticulous nature and his appreciation for the stories that these small treasures could tell. Each item was a valuable piece of a larger narrative that captivated him until his last days.

Those who knew John de Jong would describe him as a selfless individual, always putting the needs of others before his own. His faith-filled spirit guided his actions, and his ability to fix anything that needed repair was nearly legendary.
