Khalil Moorman Obituary

Khalil Fred Moorman, born June 25, 1967, was the first born and only son of his parents, the late Fred Lee Moorman and living mother, Mildred Moorman Stokes.

Khalil entered the world as a fighter! He was birthed prematurely at 3 pounds and 7 ounces in New York’s Bronx Lebanon Hospital.  At that point in time, medical practices required his continuance in care until he was able to gain the required discharge weight minimum in excess of 5 pounds. He then was finally released to his family at 5 weeks old.

However, after only a brief stay at home, Khalil was rushed to pediatric emergency surgery to correct a severe intestinal blockage that had developed.  Before he reached his first birthday, it was again necessary to return to the hospital when Khalil contracted bronchiolitis, requiring immediate hospitalization and his eventual recovery. Despite these health challenges, Khalil developed a strong appetite across his first year on an enhanced diet, and weighed in at 25 pounds on his first birthday celebration!

Khalil and his siblings were raised primarily in New York City at the start, before the family relocated to Columbia, Maryland. There he, his mother and two sisters began life anew. His academic interests varied from a fascination with marine life as a young child, to a shift to architecture, engineering and business later on.

Furthermore, his deep fascination with the sea and marine life developed through his cherished encyclopedia collection, written by the celebrated oceanographer, the late Jacque Cousteau.   Khalil’s sports interests began with karate, then moved to cycling and weight-lifting.   Additionally, Khalil loved to do drawings. This evolved into his learning computer aided design (CAD) which began during his high school experiences in Howard County, Maryland.

Upon completing high school, he aspired to become an architectural engineer.  He gained admission to the Rochester Institute of Technology.  However, unexpected financial turmoil inhibited this pursuit and he sought an alternative pathway.  With much determination, he pushed past the hindrances and worked persistently through college completion elsewhere.  Khalil succeeded at earning his Bachelor’s Degree in marketing from the University of Baltimore in Baltimore, Maryland.

With his degree in hand, Khalil continued to press forward to establish a professional career. However, in the face of mixed results, he began to consider the military and eventually enlisted for a brief stent in the United States Army. Upon honorable discharge from active duty, he continued with reservist in mind while living in Portland, Oregon.

Ultimately, Khalil settled in Seattle, Washington where he lived for many, many years before his departure—his going home to be with the Lord—on November 30, 2019.

Khalil’s legacy is his perseverance amidst life’s challenges and obstacles he hurdled across. The cause of death document informs, Khalil suffered from hypertensive cardio vascular disease and end stage chronic kidney disease.

Khalil will always be remembered as a fighter. He will be forever loved and cherished in our hearts and minds as a son, a brother, and a friend.  He is survived by his mother, Mildred Moorman Stokes of Waldorf Maryland, and two sisters--Yasmin Moorman of New York City and Zenobia Garrison of Boyds, Maryland. Also brother-in-law Shawn Garrison and two adult age nephews, Jamil and Hassan Garrison. In addition, several aunts, first and second generation cousins remain to celebrate his sojourn.
