Matthew R. DOBIE

1985-2017

If you asked Matt about his day, he might tell you about the new deal he was going to close at work, his plans to open his own firm, the groupings he had at the gun range, or a pizza he devoured the night before. He wouldn't mention his numerous chemo injections, his stem cell transplant, or his struggle with progressive scleroderma. Rather than feel sorry for himself or call attention to his affliction, he chose to focus on what mattered most to him: his friends, his family, his many hobbies, and his work.

Matt grew up in Madrona, a neighborhood in Seattle. He moved from his hometown to live in New York briefly after his teenage years and eventually moved to California where he settled into a career selling commercial real estate. Matt was a people person; he could talk to anyone about anything, so he naturally thrived in this business of human connection. Slowly but surely, he made a name for himself and gained a reputation as a man with a steely resolve, an infectious laugh, and a can-do attitude.

On January 16th 2017, Matt died at UC Irvine Hospital from complications of pneumonia and progressive scleroderma. He passed over peacefully as his mother Sharon held his hand. He was 31 years old when he died. Despite his circumstances, Matt was committed to living fully with love in his heart every single day. He always spoiled those around him with the richest version of himself, even as his condition worsened. His absence will be felt by many across the country and will be missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him. Friend, brother, son, a man of incredible character and charisma, there will never be another one quite like Matt.

Matthew was buried at Calvary Cemetery on January 28, 2017 and his life celebrated the same day at St. Therese Parish.
