Janis Joy Lindley, surrounded by many of her loved ones in Seattle, WA, passed away on the early morning of July 3, 2024. She battled various forms of cancer for the past 12 years, finally entering hospice in February of this year, but continuing to press on for another five months. In the immediate days after her passing so many calls and messages received recounted her character, her tenacity, her fighting spirit. She was truly a warrior like no other! Above her bed hung a painting she created of a pink ninja swinging her sword in battle. This was an accurate representation of her stubborn refusal to succumb without a fight.
Janis was born in Eugene, OR on December 7, 1952 to Merle and Joy Norman. She was the fourth of seven children. Her siblings are John Norman (deceased), Joel Norman (deceased), Jeff Norman, Judith Jeffery, Jill Culwell, and Jenell Miller. Janis grew up in Eugene. Attended North Eugene High School where she graduated in 1971. She attended University of Oregon, Eugene, OR and University of Montana, Missoula, MT. She received a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Master of Teaching at University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, WA.
Janis is survived by her husband, Charles “Chuck” Allen Lindley whom she married on August 28 of 1971. She is also survived by her children: Christopher Lindley, Elisabeth Lindley, Heather McClung, and Brandon Lindley.
Janis has worn numerous hats throughout her life. A business owner, entrepreneur, pastor’s wife, mother, teacher, artist, missionary, and advocate for anti-human trafficking both in India and in Indonesia. She has poured her life and passion for art into the young, the old, all the way from India and Nepal to the local here in Tacoma and Seattle. Wherever she goes, she inspires! She has been forever tireless in her pursuit of empowering others to discover their God-given identities as artists.
Her surviving family will be holding a memorial service for her at 1pm on August 10, 2024 at 3102 S 23rd St, in Tacoma, WA. There will also be a reception in her honor on August 11, 2024, at 2:30pm at 3201 Hunter Blvd S, in Seattle, WA.
