Bonnie Jean Sonnenfeld, 91, passed peacefully into God's loving embrace on July 3rd, 2025. She was surrounded by the love and warmth of her family after a brief illness.
Bonnie Jean Hedman was born on December 16th, 1933, in Mason City, Iowa, to Edwin Olaf Hedman and Maybel Overa Johnson. She found a loving home with her adoptive grandparents, Laura Overa Thompson and Oscar Casper Johnson, becoming Bonnie Jean Johnson. Bonnie shared her childhood with late siblings Clair, Don, Dwayne, Quentin, Marian, and Jean.
After graduating high school, Bonnie moved to Denver, Colorado, where she met the love of her life, Eugene Arnold Sonnenfeld (1925 - 2013). Their marriage, in May 1959, marked the beginning of over five decades of cherished partnership. Together, they raised four children: Eugene Arnold (d. 1959), Dixie Overa, Kurt Frederick, and Craig Eugene. In 1994, they moved to Coon Rapids, Minnesota, to be closer to family. Bonnie relocated to Seattle in 2022 to live with her daughter and son-in-law, where she lived until she passed.
A self-described "simple Iowa girl,” Bonnie's life was defined by her unwavering faith in God, her profound love for her husband, her children, her grandchildren, her extended family, and her dear friends. She was a gentle, kind spirit who delighted in long country drives, traveling to new places, and visiting with family and friends near and far. Bonnie was a talented artist and found solace and joy in reading, knitting, crocheting, and puzzles. and word games, and the occasional polka or square dance. Her vibrant energy kept her active and healthy throughout her ninety-one years. She dedicated her life to her faith, her family, her home, and her church. She leaves a legacy as a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and friend who will be profoundly missed by all.
Bonnie is survived by her devoted children; Dixie (Tim Steele), Kurt (Paula), and Craig (Katie); her beloved grandchildren; Andrea, Amy, Allison, Austin, Matthew, and Natasha. She also leaves behind many cherished great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
A celebration of Bonnie’s life and Memorial Service will be held at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Maple Grove, Minnesota, on October 11th, 2025, at 11 a.m. She will be interred, alongside her husband Gene, at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.
