Deborah Lee Olson

Deborah Olson, a beacon of joy and optimism, passed away on March 19, 2024, in Seattle, Washington, after a brave battle with cancer. Born on October 13, 1950, in Portola, California, Deborah's life was a testament to her loving spirit and her relentless pursuit of new experiences.

After graduating from Portola High School in 1968, Deborah went on to earn her Associate Degree in Science, specializing in respiratory therapy, a field where she dedicated herself to caring for others. Her career later transitioned into the banking industry, where she ascended the ranks, becoming a respected bank manager, then area manager before her retirement in 2004.

A lifelong learner and adventurer at heart, Deborah's early years in the small town of Graeagle in the Sierra Nevada Mountains fostered her love for cheerleading, barrel racing, and skiing. These formative experiences ignited a passion for exploration that would define much of her life. Alongside her beloved husband, Kenny Olson, she learned to sail in the Hawaiian Islands, a hobby that evolved into a shared passion for boating and discovery.

Deborah's zest for life was matched by her commitment to her community. As an active member of the West Seattle Yacht Club, she made history as the first woman commodore, leading with grace and tenacity. Her adventurous spirit also led her to embrace river rafting, zip lining, and other exhilarating activities, always with a smile and a sense of wonder.

Beyond her thrill-seeking endeavors, Deborah was a culinary enthusiast who relished the opportunity to cook and entertain. Her home was a warm and welcoming place where family and friends gathered to enjoy her delicious meals and the comfort of her company.

Her love for her community was evident through her extensive volunteer work. Deborah's dedication to organizations like the Fred Hutchinson Guild, Westside Baby, and the Hansville Community Center showcased her compassionate nature. She was also an integral part of the Flotsam and Jetsam Garden Club, where she helped cultivate beauty and friendships.

Deborah leaves behind a legacy of love and kindness, survived by her husband, Kenny Olson; her older brother, Tom; younger brother, John; little sister, Theresa; her children, Heather, James and Trey; and her cherished grandchildren, Amelia, Samantha, Brady, Henry, and Allison. Each family member, including her Brothers and Sister in Laws, Nieces and Nephews and many Friends reflects a facet of her generous spirit and carries forward her legacy of positivity and joy.

Words such as loving, kind, and optimistic only begin to capture the essence of Deborah. Her radiant smile and unwavering positivity lifted the spirits of all who knew her. She approached every challenge with a hopeful heart and an unshakeable belief in the goodness of people.

Deborah's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, adventure, and service. Deborah took the bad with the good and never complained. As we bid farewell to this extraordinary woman, we celebrate the countless lives she touched and the indelible mark she has left on the world. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, just as the stars she so dearly loved to sail under will continue to shine brightly in the night sky.

Deborah's journey through life was remarkable, not only for the paths she chose but for the countless hearts she warmed along the way. As we honor her memory, we are reminded of the impact one life can have when lived with courage, compassion, and a boundless capacity for love.

A Celebration of Deborah's Life will be held April 7th, 2024, at Salty’s Restaurant in West Seattle between 1pm and 4pm in the Admiral Room for all her Friends and Family. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Fred Hutchison Cancer Center.
