Donald Paul Marquart

Born in Seattle, Washington, Don was the sixth of seven children born to Joseph Marquart & Margaret Macht Marquart.  Don attended Holy Family Catholic School in White Center and was a proud graduate of O’Dea High School, Class of 1959. He attended night school at University of Puget Sound for seven years while working full time as a patrolman earning his BA in Public Administration.

Don lived his entire 79 years in Seattle, marrying Marilee Wickstrom in 1962 and raising daughters Monica and Shannon. He was a devoted son, brother, husband, father, uncle and in his most favorite role: grandfather. He was known as Poppy by his grandchildren and all of their friends that came to know him.

Though Don held multiple jobs in his early years, he found his true calling when he joined the Seattle Police Department in 1964. He worked his way up to Major and retired in 1992. Don took great pride in being a police officer and was dedicated to the protection of all citizens. He was well respected among his colleagues because he was a straight talker and everyone knew where they stood with him.

Once he retired, Don found new hobbies. Gardening would occupy most of his time. He enjoyed his plants and the joy they brought others. He also became the “chef” of the house and enjoyed trying new recipes, and sharing them with friends and family. Don loved numerous month long car trips traveling the US with his wife, and good friends: he hit all 50 states! Don was a sports fan from his early days playing football, baseball, soccer, basketball and later golf, bowling and fishing. He could always be found listening to Mariner’s or Seahawk’s game on the radio while tinkering on things in his garage.

Don was a devote Catholic his entire life. His faith in God would never fade even as he progressed with Alzheimer’s.  He knew his golden wings would be ready for him when he was chosen to sit next to his Father.

Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Marilee, his daughters, Monica Wingard (Phil), Shannon Morton (Greg); his grandchildren, Derek Wingard, Mikaela Wingard, Tyler Morton and Kilie  Morton; his sister Mary Jansson, and his brothers David Marquart and Jim Marquart.

A private burial service will be held at Calvary Catholic Cemetery.
