Donald M Richter

April 5, 1941 — May 22, 2025

Burien

Donald Richter was born, and grew up, in Bellingham, WA, where he went to Bellingham High School and earned his education degree from Western Washington University.

Following a stint in Vancouver, WA, he left teaching to go on the road and play music in his band, aptly named "Music." After crisscrossing North America for several years, he found himself working at a record store in Olympia, WA. This job would prove pivotal. It was there he sold an Art Garfunkel record to his future wife of 47 years, Terry Kaufman.

They married in 1978. Always on the lookout for a good deal, he got a 3-for-1 as the marriage also included two young boys, Michael Brad and Brian. The family moved to the Seattle suburb of Burien three years later, and he remained in the record business until both sons had finished high school.

Don grew tired of the retail life and decided to go back into teaching. After subbing for a while in local school districts he landed a job teaching music at Crestwood Elementary School in Kent, WA. It would be the last time he'd have to interview for any position, as he retired from Crestwood 18 years later. His teaching methods and commitment to his students were a reflection of both his love of music and his love of education.

After retirement, Don and Terry traveled the world. Essentially lifelong Washingtonians, the two visited some fifteen countries on five of the seven continents and there was always a trip in the works. A man of principle and conviction, his travels served to both challenge and reinforce those principles and convictions.

His love for, and dedication to, Cleveland baseball is legendary (if unfortunate) and he relished a good joke and a good time. To his students, his neighbors and especially his family, he was a shining light.

That light went out on May 22. Following a series of health issues that began in late 2023, the first time he'd encountered any such problems, his body could no longer keep up the fight. He died at home, with Terry by his side. He was loved and he will be missed.
