Dorothy Young Hall
Seattle, WA; formerly Des Moines, IA
Dorothy Ann Young Hall, 85, passed away on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 in Seattle, Washington from Alzheimer's disease.
Dorothy was born in Opelousas, Louisiana on December 30, 1930. She was the daughter of Howard "H.F." Young, Sr. and Alice Hornsby Young. She earned a BS degree in Home Economics from Louisiana College and a Masters degree in Religious Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary. Dorothy taught home economics and science in Louisiana and Illinois and for more than 20 years in Des Moines, Iowa, at Hoover High School, Hoyt Middle School and East High School. She retired in 1991.
A lifelong Christian, Dorothy served the communities she lived in by teaching and leading, and was known for standing up for and helping the "underdog" in her midst. She was a self-taught, master seamstress who could custom tailor suits, make wedding and prom dresses, slipcover furniture and redeem tired or ill-fitting clothing of any kind. She was a southern lady with Midwest sensibilities and a fine, scratch cook who shared her gift of hospitality with many.
Dorothy married Dr. Marion Hall in 1958; he predeceased her in 1989. She is survived by her three children, Helen Hall, Bryan Hall (Nan) and Ann Hall Vander Hijde (Steve); five grandchildren, Katharine, Austin and Caroline Hall and Grant and Anja Vander Hijde of the Seattle area; four sisters, Wilma Baker, Katherine LaFleur, Virginia Washington and Betty Casselman of Louisiana; and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, and her siblings Bennett Young, Beryl Miller and Howard Young, Jr. of Louisiana.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00PM on June 8, 2016 at West Side Presbyterian Church in Seattle. Memorial gifts may be made to the Cure Alzheimer's Fund at http://curealz.org/
