Douglas D. Johnson, MD, 77, of Freeland, WA passed away on November 6, 2019. Doug had a month long battle with cardiac and pulmonary complications in the ICU at Swedish Hospital. During his time in the ICU, many of his nurses recalled fond memories of having worked with him years ago. He was happy to have passed away in their loving care.
Doug was born on May 30, 1942 to Albert and Mildred Johnson in New York, NY. After graduating from high school in 1960, he studied science at CCNY and received his masters degree in biochemistry before completing medical school at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. After graduation, he began an internship in general and cardiac surgery at UCLA and eventually move to Seattle to begin his cardiac surgery practice and 30 year career in cardiac medicine.
In 1980, he married Joal and they had three children, Angela Carmella, Jennifer Joli and Douglas Dean Jr. As a family, they went on ski trips and sailing adventures, enjoyed fly fishing, wine making, art collecting, cooking, and spending their summers at their cattle farm on Whidbey Island, WA.
After retiring in 1997, Doug moved to his summer home, Joli Farms, on Whidbey Island and began a few new careers/ hobbies raising quarter horses, egg farming, hunting, studying photography, gardening, cheese making, baking, hunting, woodworking, and traveling (Japan, Europe, South America, Africa, Caribbean). And his more recent loves of industrial sewing, leather pressing, and bonsai trimming kept him busy.
Doug/Dad/Grandpa will be forever remembered by his daughters Angela and Jennifer, his son DJ, his three grandchildren (John Reed III, Georgina Rose and Audrey Jeanne) and his brother Norman. His partner Leah and cousins, Joan, Diane, Doug and Kazue also grieve his passing.
