Dwight Walker was born in Jamestown, North Dakota in September of 1952. While he was born the year General Dwight Eisenhower was elected as President of the United State, his mother always insisted he was not named after General Eisenhower. Dwight was the third child Oliver and Helen Walker.
In the fall of 1954, the Walker family moved to Seattle, Washington, where they lived in West Seattle. On March 25, 1956, Dwight was baptized at Hope Lutheran Church. He went to school and resided in West Seattle until his adult years. In 1971, Dwight attended the Job Corps where he graduated with a certification in automotive repair. This skill served him well over the years.
In addition to working with cars, Dwight was adept at home repair, maintenance, landscaping, and general handyman work. Despite the fact that Dwight did not grow up with someone to teach him those skills, through his keen sense of observation and willingness to learn he became very proficient at many things and much in demand by friends and family.
Dwight was very creative and enjoyed art, crafts and making jewelry. He even fashioned special tools to make things easier. During his later years he developed a fondness for music and worked with and attended many “Blues” festivals and he did like to dance! He had the ability to tell a story about himself or others like nobody else. He could capture his audience and often had everyone laughing.
While Dwight may not have had much in the way of material things, he was always resourceful with what he had. During his life, he faced several health problems including asthma and a major surgery at age 14. His first confrontation with cancer was when he was in his twenties. Dwight endured many surgeries during his lifetime but always maintained a positive attitude. He faced and fought a very fierce cancer foe in his last years.
Dwight developed many lasting friendships. At the risk of leaving someone out, we would especially like to remember Pat and his extended family and Jan and her extended family among some of his most longtime friends. In addition, Dwight was very blessed to have Rose Mary and her brother David in the last few years of his life. While under Rose Mary’s exceptional care, Dwight went to be with his Lord, Jesus Christ on March 25, 2023.
Dwight is survived by Diane and John Rafert and family and Lewis and Ann Walker and family. We, as Dwight’s surviving family, are thankful to Rose Mary and David for the amazing gift they were to our brother.
Ecclesiastes 12:7
... and the dust returns to the ground it came from, and the spirit (soul) returns to God who gave it.
