Edwin W. "Skip" Luke, 79, passed away on July 15, 2024, in Seattle, Washington. Born on April 23, 1945, in Urbana, Illinois, he was a man of many talents and passions.
Skip’s career was as diverse as his interests, encompassing roles such as a Marine Engineer at Wanderbird Cruises, Deck Hand and Acting Mate at Spirit Cruises and Schooner Timberwind, and various positions in the railroad industry including Switchman/Carman at Grand Canyon Railway; Engineer at Sumpter Valley and Georgetown Loop Railroads; and Train Engineer and Dispatcher at Illinois Central, White Pass & Yukon, and Burlington Northern Railroads. He also spent significant years as an Underground Miner from 1971 to 1984.
A man with a perpetual case of wanderlust, Skip was not only a devoted railroad enthusiast but also a talented artist, creative writer, and bass guitarist. His hobbies were a reflection of his vibrant spirit; he was an avid model train collector, ham radio operator, telegrapher, photographer, and motorcycle racer. His later years were spent with loyal companions Harley and Snuggles by his side.
Skip is survived by his children, Melissa Haberstroh (Jeff) of Texas, Kristopher Luke of Illinois, Ann Luke-Montez (Aaron) of Texas, Jesse D. Luke of Washington, and Michael D. Luke (Georgia) of Idaho. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Daisy and Patrick, his brother Michael Luke and wife Robyn, and nieces Stephanie and Whitney (Matt). He was preceded in death by his parents, Professor E. D. and Laverne “Dee Dee” Luke.
A Celebration of Life will be held at the Valley Tavern in Port Hadlock, Washington, on September 14, 2024. The family has entrusted the arrangements to Emmick Family Funeral Home in Seattle, WA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Jefferson County, Port Townsend, Washington in memory of Skip’s love for animals. Skip will be remembered for his dynamic and multifaceted life, leaving a legacy of adventure and creativity that will be cherished by all who knew him.
