Eleni (Kourkoutis) Charouhas

Eleni (Kourkoutis) Charouhas was born in Theva, Greece on June 2nd, 1937 to her parents Kalliopi and Dimitiri Kourkoutis. She spent her youth residing in Greece, and graduated from High School in 1954. Shortly thereafter, she heartbreakingly lost both of her parents. Not only was Eleni then required to sustain a job in order to put herself through college, she was further called to fill her parents shoes by raising her younger brother, Andreas. She supported herself and her brother by working for a construction company, followed by employment with one of Theva’s more prominent architectual firms.

In 1964, Eleni was blessed to encounter the man with whom she would spend the rest of her life, Constantine G. Charouhas (Gus). Kosta and Eleni experienced that rare love at first sight phenomenon. They became engaged after one week, and married two weeks after they first layed eyes on one another, on August 9th, 1964. Shortly after their wedding, the two soul mates moved to Seattle, WA, where Eleni quickly learned to speak English by delving into her Greek Orthodox Faith Community at Saint Demetrios Church.

As the couple continued to plant faithful roots, they learned they were to expect the most incredible blessing of all - their only child, George, whom they named after Gus’ Grandfather. To his parent’s elation, George was born on July 8th, 1965. Eleni felt overjoyed in her vocations as wife and mother. Her marriage to Gus lasted 55 years, until his death on September 14, 2019. Eleni always lived her life to the fullest by loving and serving her family with all of her heart.

Equally important, her love and service did not end at home. Beginning in 1974, Eleni further became a strong example of faith, charity and grace at her Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption, which continued until the final years of her life. Her numerous gifts and accomplishments manifested in the many roles of stewardship she humbly accepted at her parish. She worked as the church secretary for over 20 years, was president of the Parish Council, and contributed to the Pholoptochos Society as their President.

Moreover, Eleni’s Priests could always depend on her for nourishing them during their monthly meeting times with her culinary delights. Her fellow parishoners were able to additionally rely on her to apply any of her remaining time towards creating her incredibly delicious cuisine assortments, pastry varieties and her extremely popular Bougatsa (which would always sell out) at the Greek Festivals every year.

Along with being the world’s best wife and mother, Eleni's third most cherished role was that of devoted Grandmother (YiaYia) to her two Grandchildren, Konstantinos (Kosta) born in 2002, and, Eleni (Lena) born in 2005. During the formative years of her Grandchildren’s lives, Eleni was blessed to reside with her family in the same home. Just as she always had, Eleni remained selflessly committed to their needs, and remained an integral support to their development. She rejoiced in them and gave herself wholly to them.

Eleni is survived by her son, George, and Grandchildren, Kosta and Lena. She is also survived by her sister in law Soula, her niece Pepi and nephew Dimitri. She is preceded in death by her husband Kosta, her parents, Dimitri & Kalliopi and her brother Andreas Kourkoutis.

Funeral service will be at the Greek Orthodox Church of the Assumption

On Thursday October 12th at 11:00AM located at 1804 13th Ave. in Seattle.

Internment at Evergreen-Washelli Cemetery at 2:00PM
