Fumie Taniguchi

Fumie peacefully passed away at home on November 15, 2020.
Fumie was born on May 25th, 1920 in Wahiawa, Hawaii to Toichiro and Chikayo Ikeda. At the age of 13, the family and her younger brother, Kenneth Fujioka, moved to Hiroshima, Japan where she completed her education. She returned to the United States in March, 1940 and settled in Seattle where she wed Sam Taniguchi in 1941.

They were happily married for 66 years until he passed away in 2007.
Shortly after the birth of their first daughter, the family was incarcerated at the Puyallup Fairgrounds "Camp Harmony" before being sent to the Minidoka Internment Camp in Idaho for four years.

Their second daughter was born there. Life in Minidoka was under harsh conditions but the family endured along with more than 10,000 other Japanese-Americans. After the end of the war, the family returned to Seattle to rebuild their lives.
Fumie always a had smile on her face and a positive outlook on life. She was a busy homemaker and enjoyed creating beautiful quilts, glass mosaic pictures, and Japanese silk embroidery art.

Throughout her life, she had a passion for organic gardening, a garden filled with trees, flowers, fruits and vegetables.
She is survived by her daughters, Merrily Taniguchi and Cheryl Furukawa (Tamotsu), grandchildren Jay and Stephanie Nava (Jason) and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn and Zoe.
The family request that remembrances may be made to Providence Hospice of Seattle, Keiro Northwest/Nikkei Manor Employees' Fund or the Seattle Betsuin Buddhist Temple.
