Henry Patrick “Pat” Duvall

1940 — 2024

Henry Patrick “Pat” Duvall, left us on July 25, 2024, after a life well-lived and full of love. Born on August 25, 1940 and raised in Ste. Genevieve, MO, Pat's journey of 83 years took him from the heartland of America to the scenic coast of Seattle, WA, where he peacefully passed away in his home, with his beloved wife, Kay, by his side. His life is a testament to the importance of family and friends, the power of dedication and patriotism, and the joy of giving back to the community.

Pat's early life in Missouri laid a strong foundation for his future interests and achievements. He developed a love of the outdoors through the Boy Scouts, where he became an Eagle Scout in his youth. Summers with his family, boating, skiing, and swimming at Kentucky Lake instilled a lifelong calling to the water. An alumnus of the Missouri School of Mines, he honed his skills in Applied Engineering Mathematics before furthering his education with a second Bachelor of Science degree, in Aeronautics and Astronautics at the University of Washington.

His career was as diverse as it was impressive. Pat began his military career in the required Basic ROTC two-year commitment that came with his state college education. He struggled through the minimum requirements of Basic ROTC, but later signed on for Senior ROTC for the additional stipend (and a bit of a pride challenge). He had no idea at the time what a strong dedication he would soon develop for the military. He steadily worked his way through the ranks, ultimately serving as a Full Bird Colonel in the US Army Reserve, and making the final (top 200 of approximately 1200 candidates) cut for general officer consideration, three out of four years that he applied. He documented his formative military journey and the important life lessons he learned, with nostalgia and pride in his memoir, "Part Time Soldier."

His professional life included significant contributions to the Port of Tacoma and a long-standing career at Boeing, from which he retired, only to continue his work in the aerospace industry with Boeing subcontractors and China Airlines. Pat took pride in everything he did, and his civilian career was no exception. He was a dedicated and diligent employee and loved working in the aerospace industry, establishing himself as a well respected figure in his field.

Even in retirement, Pat's zest for life and hard work did not dwindle. He volunteered at South Seattle Community College, as a math tutor. He was wrapping up his 20th year volunteering at the Boeing Classic, demonstrating his unwavering commitment to his community. Pat's interests were as varied as his professional endeavors. His love of airplanes led him to pursue sailplane flying in his younger years. He was an avid golfer, a passion he shared with friends and family alike. Travel was another joy in his life; San Diego, Arizona, and Lake Chelan were among his and Kay's favorite destinations — places where memories were made and cherished, visiting family and friends, alike. Pat's love for water extended to the Arbor Heights Swim Club, where he volunteered in his kids’ childhood years — serving as the President of the AHSC Board and logging countless hours timing swim meets. He religiously swam laps, every summer, and would get a little restless if it had been too many days between swims.

His beloved wife, Catherine "Kay" Duvall, stood by his side for every adventure in their 58 years of marriage. Together, they raised a family that included their most cherished relationships, their children, Mike Duvall (Tracy), Kim Perry (Jedd), and Kristin Pavon (Mike). They were also blessed with six grandchildren: Ally (Matt), Riley, Kyla, Maxx, Zoey, and Brady. “Papa” shared countless memorable hours with each of them, taking them to the flight museum or watching airplanes take off and land, attending their many and varied sporting events, telling bedtime stories, playing poker and board games, swimming at the pool, and vacationing together. Pat's love for storytelling was legendary, especially tales about woodland creatures like Racky the Raccoon, which delighted his children and grandchildren alike. His creativity shone through in the children's book "What's My Name?" brought to life with illustrations by his talented granddaughter, Ally.

Pat was preceded in death by his parents, Orville and Odile (Naeger) Duvall, but leaves behind a legacy through his siblings Cassie Marsh (Daniel), Sr. Judith Ann Duvall, Joe Duvall (Carolyn), and Mark Duvall (Jill), as well as many cherished in-laws and extended family members who will continue to be inspired by his life.

The relationships Pat nurtured throughout his life were the cornerstone of his happiness. He was the truest definition of a friend. His devotion to loved ones led him to always schedule visits to those he knew from all the chapters of his life, in his daily life and during his travels: childhood and college friends, military and work colleagues, previous neighbors, church friends, friends of his children, and of course, relatives. And those that he could not visit in person, or not often enough, he made sure to contact often by phone or email. Pat was the welcoming face in the crowd, the thoughtful neighbor, the dedicated friend who always had the time for a chat or a long conversation. His kindness was a beacon that drew people to him, and his strong handshake was a symbol of his affection and regard for others.

As we reflect on the life of Pat Duvall, let us remember that each day is an opportunity to create a lasting impact on the world around us. Pat's life is a masterclass in making every moment count. You never had to question what he felt about you as he spent everyday finding new ways to connect with his family, friends, and community. We can all find ways to live life more like Pat — making time for the moments (big and small), never letting too much time lapse before reaching out, doing all the things you’ve dreamed of, squeezing in a quick round of golf, and leisurely sipping an after-dinner cup of coffee.

As summarized in his memoir, “Pursue the opportunities and let the chips fall where they may; chances are it will all work out. At least you will have no lingering regrets!” Pat's story is not one of an end. His light shines bright in all of those who knew him and the rays of his love will continue to touch many lifetimes.
