It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Janet Aileen Stockey, beloved mother, wife, sister and friend, and enrolled member of the Otoe-Missouria tribe. She passed away peacefully on December 28, 2024.
Janet (Jan) was born on September 25, 1947, to Cecile and Boyd Williams in Downey, California. Her sister, Yvonne, was born 19 months later. She graduated from Downey High School in 1965, where she met David Stockey. They married in February, 1968, after he returned from his decorated service in Vietnam. They moved to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where David completed his service in the U.S. Army. Their only child, Crystal, was born December, 1968. A few weeks later, Jan and Dave drove cross country back to Downey. They resided in North County San Diego for most of their lives.
Jan’s career included dental hygiene and bolt and fastener sales. She worked for 14 years at Paul Ecke Poinsettia Ranch as a sales manager, combining her love of horticulture and people. She worked at Cal State San Marcos as a Study Abroad Advisor in the Global Education Department until her early retirement in 2008. She realized her dream of traveling to Europe during that time.
In 2008, Jan and Dave moved to Red Lodge, Montana. Jan stayed active as a member of the garden club, book club, bridge club, and Rotary. After Dave passed away in 2011, Janet regularly drove to Oklahoma, New Mexico, California and Washington State to visit family and friends, enjoying the open road with its sense of adventure and solace. She adored spending time with her granddaughters, Mackenzie and Delaney, who were by her side during her last days.
Jan was a beautiful, fun, outgoing woman with a deep passion for life and sense of adventure. In her youth, she was a Girl Scout and enjoyed Baptist church camp. In her teen years, she body surfed the waves at Huntington Beach. Jan was an avid jogger, skier, and hiker. She played in the first women’s soccer league in San Diego County. She spent many years camping and hiking in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, the Beartooths and Yellowstone. She summited Mt. Whitney at the age of 66.
We will miss you so much, Jan. You were a bright and shining light to so many people.
Jan is survived by her daughter, Crystal Tetrick, granddaughters, Mackenzie Tetrick and Delaney Tetrick and sister, Yvonne (Richard) Van Dyke. She is preceded in death by her husband, David Stockey.
