Kathryn Butzerin

Kathryn Freitas grew up in West Seattle and graduated as valedictorian from Holy Rosary High School in 1953. She received a scholarship to Gonzaga University where she met her husband of 52 years, Joseph Butzerin. Joe and Kathryn returned to West Seattle where they raised their six children: Joanne, Teresa, Carla, Peter, Robert, and Mary. Kathryn worked as teacher and administrator, but her real love was gardening.

She was a Master Gardner and spent much of her time working in her beautiful garden on the corner of Hill Street. She raised chickens, ducks, rabbits, and bees in addition to fruit trees, vegetables, and every imaginable variety of flower.

Kathryn also loved opera, attended daily mass at Holy Rosary, swam at the YMCA, and was an active member of the West Seattle community. Her husband Joe died in 2011. In addition to her six children, Kathryn is survived by 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
