Marcus David Cunningham was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on July 21, 1973. He lived in Texas until he was 5 years old, when his family moved to Spokane, WA. He graduated from Mead High School and then from Whitworth University in 1995. He earned a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Leadership at Gonzaga University, where he became a lifelong fan of the Zags men’s basketball team. He moved to Seattle in the late 1990s and worked in roles of increasing responsibility at Seattle City Light for over 20 years. Mark is survived by his children Claire (17) and Shea (8); father Michael (wife Nancy), older brother Mick (fiancé Alexa; children Kate and Lucas), younger sister Amanda Boyum (husband Jon; children Nate and Hannah), and dog Bodhi. Mark’s mother, Linda, passed away in 2012.
Mark was an outdoorsman, an athlete, and a comic. He had a curious mind, with interests ranging from grunge music to ancient civilizations. He was a talented Nordic skier who especially loved skate skiing at Cabin Creek. He learned to fly fish with his dad and brother on the rivers of Idaho and Montana, and he fished for steelhead, salmon, and trout as often as he could. He was a natural athlete who excelled at most sports he tried, including some he invented. Mark was passionate about the importance of protecting nature and the wild creatures in it. He loved spending time at Priest Lake, Idaho, the Deschutes River, and the Big Island of Hawaii. Mark was always the funniest person in the room but never the center of attention. He had a close circle of college friends and was a cherished brother, son, and uncle. More than anything, he was a devoted father.
No service is planned at his request. In lieu of flowers, Mark asked that donations be made to NRDC , Defenders of Wildlife , or the Oral Cancer Foundation .
