M.C. Sullivan

Born: May 20, 1924

Died: March 27, 2020

M.C. Sullivan “Sully” passed away peacefully at home in his sleep at the age of 95 early in the morning of March 27, 2020. He was an army veteran who proudly served our country for 27 years during WWII, the Korean war and the Vietnam war. Born in Jefferson Davis County near Prentiss, Mississippi on May 20, 1924 to Martin and Carrie Sullivan, he was the only son of the five children and lived and worked on his parent’s farm until joining the army at 18 during the height of WWII.

After the war ended, he reenlisted and while home on leave in 1950 he met and soon after married, Dorothy Dell Barnes, also of Prentiss, Mississippi. Together they would travel to France, Los Angeles, California and finally Tacoma, Washington where they would raise three sons and a grandson. M.C. would continue to serve our country until 1971, when he retired from the army and went to work for the Clover Park School District. Starting as a bus driver, he worked his way up to Chief Maintenance Engineer of Clover Park Vocational Technical Institute before retiring again in 1990.

Growing up in the Jim Crow era South, one can only imagine what hatred and discrimination he experienced in addition to the pain and the destruction he saw during three wars. However, those experiences never hardened his heart and he saw the good in all people. He was always happily whistling and saying hello to everyone he passed. When you came to his house, no matter who you were, the first thing he would do is to invite you to sit down and ask if you wanted a cup of coffee. M.C. never hesitated to help someone with anything that needed fixing or doing any job that needed doing whether you asked for his help or not and he spent most of his retirement years constantly on the move, doing favors or helping any relative, friend or casual acquaintance in need.

M.C. is proceeded in death by Dorothy Dell Sullivan his wife of 68 years who passed 15 months earlier, and by his sisters, Lizzie, Mary, Margie and Josie. He is survived by three sons, Gary A., Gregory J. and Michael C. (Lori), five grandchildren, Anthony, Leah (Seth), Alexander, Nicholas, and Michael and three great-grandsons, Jaxen, Kayden and Henry. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who knew him as a kind, positive, hard-working man who was always in a good mood and quick to laugh.

The family is requesting in lieu of cards or flowers to please donate to Providence Hospice of Seattle ( https://washington.providence.org/donate/hospice-of-seattle-foundation/ways-to-give/give-now ) in appreciation of their care and comfort provided to Sully during his last days.
