Long before anyone uttered, “May the 4th be with you” on May 4th, 1945 in Seattle, WA Patricia Ann was born to Cliff and Betty Lou Sweeney, a lifelong Boeing employee and his wife. Patricia's big sister, Linda, had been born 2 years earlier, and her grandmother Lee lived with them. Grandma Lee took care of Patty so often that she thought her grandma was her mom. Brother Tom arrived 6 years later and while she was jealous at first, she became a fun big sister, always willing to play. Baby brother Ed was born when she was almost 11 and Patty helped care for him and for her aging grandma. In the high school band she played a clarinet, but she was also able to play the piano by ear, even though she rarely played. She graduated salutatorian from Foster High School in 1963 and earned a full ride scholarship to Seattle University, but decided that college wasn't for her and became a waitress for Dag's Diner and Denny's. After she left the family home in Tukwila, she would frequently come back and spend hours talking with her mom and smoking (which may have led to her COPD diagnosis in 2012.)
She married Jim Bidon and her son Lan was born in 1965, followed by son David in 1967 and daughter Janelle in 1971. Things with Jim didn't work out, and after that divorce she made a poor decision to marry someone who doesn't deserve to be mentioned, but that's how her final surname ended up being Beyer. As a single mother, Pat had several jobs to support her family. She was a bartender at the Star Lake Inn near her home, did assembly at Western Electric, was in hospitality at the Hilton, and worked for unemployment, helping people claim their benefits.
Pat was generous and loved to feed people, packing lunches and handing them out to hungry people on the streets, making no judgments, asking only if people were hungry. She was a great tipper and always passed on her good fortune to others. And Pat loved to go to the casino. Post retirement, she'd often say, “I'm going to work,” and head out to one of the nearby casinos, sometimes playing bingo but usually it was the slot machines. If she couldn't get lucky there she'd head to the track where she liked to handicap the horses and bet on them. She bowled and was a league pool player. She was a big Seattle sports fan, and didn't miss a Seahawks or Mariners game. Pat also liked college basketball and was glued to the TV during March Madness. At home she loved to play card games or roll some dice. Any holiday was an excuse to get the family together to feast and play games. Christmas was extra special, and she had each family member purchase and wrap their own present on her dime. She just wanted to watch people open gifts they loved even when she wasn't able to do the work herself. But her most treasured role was being a grandma. Grandma Pat took special trips around the country with each grandchild, and treated all her grandchildren equally, whether born or married into the family.
In 2013 Pat's big sister Linda passed. Linda had been ill for years, and during her infirmity she had told her husband Harry and Pat both that if she wasn't around they should be together, and that's what happened. Not wanting to waste her retirement, Pat had taken the COPD diagnosis seriously and quit smoking. She moved in with Harry in Eatonville where she enjoyed activities at The Eagles. She bragged about always bringing the entrees to the pot luck because “everyone else only wanted to bring side dishes”. Patty and Harry were frequent visitors to Northwest Trek and some of their contributions can still be seen there on benches bearing the names of their Sweeney and Everett family members. And Pat loved to travel, taking cruises to Bermuda, Alaska, Mexico, Hawaii, the Caribbean, and Panama, some more than once.
Surrounded by her children and their wives, Patricia Ann Sweeney Bidon Beyer left this life on May 3rd, 2026. She was preceded in death by niece Sarah Sweeney, sister Linda Everett, parents Cliff and Betty Lou Sweeney, brother-in-law/boyfriend Harry Everett, and grand-niece Jasmine Everett. She is survived by brothers Tom Sweeney (Janice), and Ed Sweeney (Karen), sons Lan Bidon (Sheila), and David Bidon (CherylAnne), daughter Janelle Komenda (Ann), 14 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren with another 1 on the way, and many nieces/nephews and grand-nieces/nephews.
