Our beloved mother, Sarah Louise Cottrell Roberts Muchnick, RN, MSN, CNE, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2024. She was 75.
Sarah was preceded in death by her father Clark Cottrell Jr., her mother Dorothy Carle Cottrell, her husband Mark Muchnick, her sister Nancy Cottrell Cyr, and her step-son Mark Muchnick. She is survived by her brother Clark Cottrell III. Sarah is also survived by a large blended family that includes her five children with her first husband, Richard Roberts, Katie (Jim), Lee (Hilary), Dorothy, Ruth (Aaron), and Ramona (Mike); her child with Mark Muchnick, Meredith (Christian and Karisa); Mark’s other children Mahana (Hau), Margaret (Pati), and Martin; and her twenty-seven grandchildren.
Born near the Washington coast in Aberdeen, Sarah grew up in Grayland and Seattle, Washington. She was an accomplished artist and as a young woman she studied fine arts at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. Later, when her children were in school, Sarah went back to college and earned her R.N. from Seattle Pacific University. After working as a staff nurse at Swedish Hospital in Seattle for more than two decades, she earned a master’s degree from the University of Phoenix. As a professor of nursing at Highline College, Sarah taught a new generation of nurses–a calling that brought her great joy and fulfillment. After she retired in 2019, she was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and Lewy body dementia.
Throughout her adult life, Sarah was an active member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her faith was a source of comfort for her, and through her example, a source of strength to those who knew her. She touched many lives in her roles as teacher, leader, and friend.
Sarah leaves a lasting legacy of compassion, spirituality, healing, and dedication to education and learning. We love her, we miss her, and we are grateful that she is finally at peace in the arms of her Heavenly Parents.
