Beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Theodore (Tim) Newcomb, Jr. passed peacefully in his sleep on October 28th after a years-long wrestling match with Lewy Body Disease.Tim was a lover and writer of poetry in his later years, spending time at Hugo House in Seattle and writing with passion on subjects dear to his heart: trains, nature, trees, and ideas. A witty and charming man, Tim delighted in dinners with friends, naming birds with his grandchildren, and spending time with his peers at the Burgermaster in University Village, a meeting place that grew increasingly precious as his health challenges grew. Tim loved to spend time, either alone or with family, walking, backpacking, fishing, or snowshoeing. Tim was born in 1941 to Mary Newcomb and Theodore (Ted) Newcomb. He grew up in Ann Arbor, where his father headed the Social Psychology department at the University of Michigan. The baby of the family, arriving well after his two devoted sisters, Tim was the apple of his mother's eye. He loved canoeing and swimming in the river in Ann Arbor, and collecting fossils and cicadas. He was gifted academically, graduating from high school as a National Merit Scholar, teaching briefly in Nigeria for the Peace Corps, then earning a Masters in Neurobiology from the University of Oregon in Eugene. He played banjo and guitar and sang folk songs with groups of musical friends. He loved to sing right to the end, joining in on a favorite song even when speech grew difficult.
Tim is survived by his loving wife of 18 years, Margaret Newcomb, their daughter Gina Newcomb, his sons Danny and Gabe Newcomb from his former marriage to Molly (Rugh) Newcomb, who also survives him, by his daughters-in-law Andrea Braganza and Nancy Leonhardt, by his grandchildren, Simone, Theo, Ailie, and Isaac, by his sister Susanne Ferguson, by his sisters' children, their children, and by many fond in-laws. He is predeceased by his parents and his sister Esther Goody.
A mass to celebrate Tim's life will be held December 5th at 11 AM at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church, 8900 35th Ave NE, Seattle, WA 98115. In lieu of flowers, consider a contribution to The Nature Conservancy or other environmentally dedicated organization.
