Frieda McElhinney Obituary

Frieda affectionately known as Carol, a cherished individual whose vibrant spirit and loving heart left an indelible mark on all who knew her. Born in Emmet, North Dakota, Frieda’s (Carol) journey through life was one of passion, creativity, and dedication. She passed away peacefully on January 19, 2024, in Seattle, Washington, due to natural causes, including complications from emphysema.

Frieda’s (Carol) early years were spent in the Midwest, where she completed her grammar school education in Minnesota. Her path led her to various cities, including Minneapolis, Chicago, Toledo, and eventually Burien, Washington, where she worked as a waitress, serving customers with her trademark warmth and kindness. Frieda’s (Carol)  work ethic and her ability to connect with people were evident in every interaction, making her a beloved figure in her community.

Beyond her professional life, Frieda’s (Carol) was a devoted homemaker and caregiver, always putting the needs of her family first. She was married to the late Glen McElhinney, and together they raised their daughter, Karen, in a home filled with love and laughter.  Frieda’s (Carol) creativity shone brightly as she sewed stunning formal gowns for her daughter and crafted cushions for her husband's DC9 earthmover, showcasing her artistic talents in jewelry design as well.

Her involvement in various organizations, such as Eastern Star, Girl Scouts, Job's Daughters, and the Phi Mu Fraternity Parent Association, reflected her commitment to service and her desire to contribute to the betterment of her community.  Frieda’s (Carol) leadership and generosity of spirit were an inspiration to many, and her influence extended far beyond her immediate circle.

Frieda’s (Carol) interests were as diverse as they were engaging. She maintained a flourishing family vegetable garden, ensuring that her loved ones always had access to fresh, homegrown produce. Her adventurous spirit took her backpacking through Europe for six weeks in 1984, where she soaked in the rich cultures and histories of the continent.  Frieda’s (Carol) also explored the Caribbean Islands and Mexico, and traveled extensively across the United States, including visits to Hawaii.  Her love for travel was matched only by her love for knowledge and entertainment; she was a voracious reader and enjoyed the challenge of Sudoku and jigsaw puzzles.  Frieda’s (Carol) appreciation for classic movies provided a window into the past and a source of joy throughout her life.

Even in her 90s, Frieda’s (Carol) commitment to health and vitality was unwavering.  She worked out four days a week at NW therapy, demonstrating that age is but a number and that one's spirit can remain youthful and lively regardless of the passing years.

Frieda’s (Carol) legacy is carried on by her loving daughter, Karen McElhinney, as well as a host of nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews who were fortunate to experience her love, guidance, and the joy she brought to family gatherings.

Today, as we reflect on the life of Frieda (Carol) L. McElhinney, we remember a woman of remarkable character, whose life was a tapestry of love, creativity, and service. Her memory will continue to inspire and guide us, reminding us of the beauty and strength found in a life well-lived.  Frieda’s (Carol) journey may have come to a close, but the stories, lessons, and love she shared will resonate for generations to come.
