Phyllis Berg Obituary

Phyllis Julianna Domes/Berg was born to Carl and Lydia on February 2, 1934, the 5th child in a family of 8.  Her grandmother assisted with her birth at home on their farm near Yellowgrass, Saskatchewan.  Phyl was baptized as an infant and later confirmed into Christian faith at Hope Lutheran Church in Yellowgrass.  Phyl had a happy childhood, shared with her siblings and cousins.  As they participated in the family farm with outdoor and home activities, she mostly enjoyed helping her mom in the home.  A good student in school, as reading was her favorite pass time. This continued throughout her life!

After her high school years, she stayed home to help her mom with the care of her baby sister Sharon, born on her 18th Birthday. A few years later she joined her older sisters in Regina, where she worked and studied to be a stenographer at Balfour School of Technology. While there, she met the love of her life, Bill Berg and soon after, they married.  They moved to Florida where she worked as a stenographer. Although lonesome after moving so far from home, Phyl and Bill began their good life together. A beautiful and stylish young woman, she had an opportunity to take modelling classes and to model part time for a fashionable women’s store. From Fort Lauderdale, she and Bill moved to Bellevue, WA to start Bill’s business of photo engraving and photography.  Family life soon began with the welcoming of Billy, July 1, 1964 and Nancy (Nance), January 16, 1967.

Phyl enjoyed raising her kids and spent time with close neighbor friends and family while Bill worked at his company in Seattle.  When the kids were old enough to be on their own, she went to work with Bill, assisting in office management and also working on book layouts for a publishing company associated with their company. The family had a boat and enjoyed family adventures on the islands and joining a yacht club and rendezvousing with other friends.  Years later after Bill had sold the company, Phyl went to work for an awning company in Redmond, WA as the office manager and worked until Bill’s health started to decline.  After his passing in 2001, Phyl remained in Bellevue in the family home and retired.  Phyl had a passion for travel and was grateful to join her daughter Nance and son in law Alejandro on numerous occasions to various tropical and scenic locations. Phyl volunteered at a local Thrift store associated with American Cancer Society for several years. She especially enjoyed gardening, playing Mah Jongg, jigsaw puzzles, painting, playing cards, games & sudoku in the Seattle Times. Phyl had a beautiful smile and was loved by all, she will be greatly missed.

Phyllis is survived by her son Bill Berg, daughter Nancy Ruiz, son-in-law Alejandro Camargo Ruiz, grandsons Shaun, Christian and Dennis Berg, as well as sisters Eileen Lychuk, Joyce Hala, Sharon Babcock and brother David Domes.
