Tamaye Nomi Obituary

Tamaye Nomi. September 1929 - March 2022.

Tamaye passed away peacefully in Bellevue, WA, on March 30, 2022. She was married to Jack Y. Nomi (d. April 2010) and survived by her daughter, Julie; sons, Dr.Russell and Jeffrey; their spouses James Arzente , Gwen Nomi, and Margaret Nomi; and grandchildren, Takeiko Arzente, and Ronald and Dr. Wesley Nomi; and nieces and nephews.

Tamaye was born September 1, 1929, in Vernonia, Oregon to Junji and Taka Fujihara, who had immigrated from Kyoto. As the youngest of four children (Kasaye Kobayashi, Masaki Fujihara, and Hanaye Sakamoto), Tamaye and her family were incarcerated in Minidoka, Idaho when she was 13. After the war, the family returned to Portland, Oregon, and Tamaye attended the University of Oregon. A tuberculosis pandemic prevented her from completing her nursing degree.

She and Jack Nomi married in 1950 at the Epworth Methodist Church in Portland, Oregon. They moved to Burien, WA., four years later, as her husband started a 30-year career at the Boeing Co.

Tamaye was a dedicated wife and mother, involved with the Highline schools, led her children's Scout troops, and supported her sons’ sports. She worked as a technician at the Puget Sound Blood Center and volunteered and worked at the Overlake Hospital lab. As a devoted Blaine Memorial Methodist Church member, she was a part of the vibrant Tuesday Ladies group. Her Japanese flower arranging and needlecraft skills were prolific and admired - sewing, embroidery, knitting, and crochet.

She and her husband cherished their many bonds of friendship and family in Portland and Seattle. In Portland, a graveside service will be held at the Rose City Cemetery this summer. Memorial donations may be made to the Blaine Memorial Methodist Church, 3001 24th Avenue South, Seattle, WA 98144-1536.
